Dear Mitt: Pick the Jew

JWR makes the case for Eric Cantor as Romney's running mate.

While I agree that Rep. Cantor has Presidential timber, I would prefer to see him actually run for that office some time in the future--he's only 49, he has plenty of time--rather than be second banana on the Romney/Mr. or Ms. X ticket. For one thing, I don't think he would help garner a significant number of votes for Mr. Romney, and Rep. Cantor's state, Virginia, has been drifting toward Romney in the Presidential election polls in any case. (Regarding the Jewish demographic, President Obama is already responsible for a consequential shift in Jewish votes and, perhaps more importantly, money from the Dems to the Repubs.)

For what my opinion is worth, I believe Mr. Romney would be best served by picking a running mate from one of the big (but economically depressed) "Rust Belt" states; my own choice would be someone from Ohio, maybe Sen. Robert Portman.
