"Head"-ing In the Wrong Direction

How's this for a sci-fi movie plot: ambitious physician posits as a treatment/'cure" for having a "female" brain in a male body (and vice versa) a--wait for it--head transplant!

Pretty freaky and Frankensteinian, no?

Well, what if I told you that it's no movie, it's real life?

NRO's Wesley J. Smith discusses it here:
We are losing our ever-loving minds. An article in Newsweek takes the notion of performing head transplants as a treatment for gender dysphoria seriously. From the story:
An Italian neuroscientist researching the possibility of human head transplants believes that the procedure could help people with gender dysmorphia, Dr Sergio Canavero, of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, published a summary of the technique, known as ‘Gemini’ spinal cord fusion, in the Surgical Neurology International journal this month. In an interview with Newsweek, Dr Canavero said that the procedure could have wide-ranging implications for those who feel trapped in their own bodies, a condition he says prompts many to commit suicide. “Why not give them a chance?” he says.
Good grief. What has happened to Newsweek?
I think the better question is: What has happened to the last vestige of sanity surrounding issues relating to gender dysmorphia?
